Volunteer with us

Be the person
with nowhere else to be

We place trained volunteers on NHS wards to sit with patients, listen, and provide the kind of company that medicine alone can't.

What does a volunteer actually do?

It's simpler than you might think.

Sit and talk
Visit patients on the ward for a chat. Ask about their lives. Listen without an agenda. You're not there to fix anything, just to be there.
Offer company
Many patients go hours, sometimes days, without a non-clinical conversation. Your presence changes that. It's more valuable than it sounds.
Follow the guidelines
You'll have a supervisor and clear boundaries. You're not expected to handle clinical situations, just to flag anything that concerns you.
Sixth form volunteer
For students aged 16 to 18 who want genuine NHS experience before applying to university.
Ages 16–18

Sixth form is when UCAS personal statements get written, and "I did some work experience" lands very differently from "I completed 20 hours as a trained and DBS-checked NHS ward volunteer." We provide everything you need to make that happen: the DBS check, the induction, the supervisor on the ground, and the reference letter once you've put the hours in. You show up and do something real.

Enhanced DBS check provided free
Structured safeguarding induction
Named supervisor throughout
Reference letter after 20 hours
Volunteer ID badge
Flexible scheduling around school

Adult volunteer
For anyone aged 18 or over who wants to give their time to something that genuinely matters.
Ages 18+

No healthcare background required. No specific qualifications. What we ask for is reliability, warmth, and the willingness to show up consistently. If you've ever sat with someone in a difficult moment and understood instinctively what they needed, you already have the most important thing. We'll train you for everything else.

Common questions

Do I need any experience or qualifications?

No. We provide all training and induction. The most important things are reliability and warmth.

How much time do I need to commit?

We ask for a minimum agreed level of involvement each month, agreed when you apply. Life happens, so we're flexible, but consistency matters to the patients you'll be visiting.

What if something happens on the ward that I'm not sure how to handle?

You'll have a named supervisor who is contactable before and after every session. Your training will cover what to do if a patient discloses something concerning. You're never expected to handle clinical situations. For any safeguarding concerns or escalations, contact us directly at concerns@thehumanpart.org.uk.

Will this look good on my UCAS personal statement?

Yes. Completed, DBS-checked, trained NHS ward volunteering is exactly the kind of healthcare experience admissions teams want to see. After 20 hours we'll write you a reference.

I have more questions. Who do I ask?

Email us at help@thehumanpart.org.uk and we'll come back to you.
